Just a random thought - have you noticed that many D.J.'s phone book ads or web sites state that they are "Ohio's Premier" or "Ohio's #1" or "Best in Ohio" or "Areas Finest" etc. Curious on who gave so many a first place prize. This web site will show you all I have to offer so you can at least be totally informed on 1 of the many D.J.'s you are looking at. Don't be blown away by some D.J.'s that say they have 300,000 songs etc. I've seen some of these collections with huge numbers. They are all on computer hard drives and they have so many duplicated songs that it's insane. Just how many times do you have to have The B52's Love Shack in a karaoke or D.J. collection?? If you look at my song lists you won't see duplicates.
It's amazing how many people call me from the yellow pages and the first question out of their mouth is "What are your prices?" I totally understand this, so here they are (FREE, $100, $150, $200, $300, $595, $895, $945, $995, $1,445) That really doesn't say much does it. You don't know yet what you are getting at the different prices. Shopping for a D.J. is not something you can do on price alone. No two D.J.'s have exactly the same thing to offer you. It's not like shopping for a Ford Focus with the same color and options at every car dealership and getting the best price. There is a reason for that D.J. that charges only $200 to do a wedding, or even those that will do it just for free drinks. Yeap, there's nothing like having a totally drunk D.J. ruin your party. Come to think about it, I get at least 2 phone calls every year from an upset bride a week before her reception. She's scrambling to find a D.J. because the one she thought she had has canceled out on her at the last moment. Many times the D.J. was a friend of the family and chances are he was going to do it for free or at a much reduced rate but when he got a call from another bride who was going to pay money or pay more then the other bride he canceled out the previous engagement. It's just another example of that old saying,"YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR"! Except with FIRST CLASS D.J. & KARAOKE SERVICE YOU GET MUCH MORE THEN YOU PAY FOR!! When you're spending hundreds of dollars for a hall, hundreds on the brides dress, and thousands on the food, you don't want to cut corners on the only thing that will provide your guests with a great time and keep them at your party and give them enjoyable memories for years to come. I've even had people that have said, "We don't need any lights". That's a big mistake unless you're asking me to do a outside show in the daytime...or a funeral!! How much fun do you have listening to the radio in your car compared to going to a live concert somewhere. There's a big difference in energy level and much of that has to do with the visual aspect which is caused by the lighting effects. Sound quality is another thing that makes the difference. Compare the sound of a cheap boom box to a band performing live. You need big speakers to get the warmth and low end to fill the space of a big hall. Speakers that are cracking due to being under driven with a small power amp is tiresome on the ears and brittle high end will not get your guests on the dance floor. If you think prices for a D.J. are high, you have to take into consideration the non-stop expense of keeping the music current, the repairs of equipment, replacement of light bulbs, 3 hours of set up and 1 1/2 hours of break town time as well as the time to drive to your reception hall and the 6 hours of non stop music being provided. That's usually a 12 to 13 hour day for me.
What a shock I got in 2006 when I received the newest phone book. As I always do, I checked it to see my listing in the yellow pages. Last year there were 17 Disc Jockeys listed in one of the phone books and this year I counted 34 Disc Jockeys in the yellow pages. In 1 year the number of D.J.s had doubled. This tells me there are a bunch of beginners jumping on the band wagon because they think it's easy money. Their free downloaded songs, cheap sound systems and no entertainment experience are good reasons not to hire these beginners. They expect to charge you the same price as the Disc Jockeys that know how to properly run the equipment & also have many years of experience.
In October 2006 I got invited to a wedding reception that I attended and I witnessed a D.J. that played only one style of music....COUNTRY.....all night long other then The Chicken Dance and Y.M.C.A.! People at my table were complaining among themselves about how he should play something else like some ROCK. This D.J. was also using, believe it or not....car stereo speakers as his main speakers on the stage as well as a guitar amplifier for sound production. Everything sounded very honky midrange in tone. The guy was using a lap top computer and when he went to play Y.M.C.A. what played was a strictly instrumental version of the song which he stopped playing 1 minute into the song when he noticed no one was singing on the song. He evidently went and downloaded a bunch of music from the internet to do this wedding and didn't even bother to take the time to listen to the music first to make sure the version he downloaded was ok!
How are these new D.J.s gonna get their learning experience??? They're gonna learn from all the mistakes, if they learn at all, that they'll make at your party that you're paying for. Kinda like getting paid money to go to college!! I don't think you want to pay for there education do you? So be sure to go with an experienced D.J.
In August 2005 I went out to some local bars to check out some other D.J.'s out of curiousity to see how I compared. OMG I couldn't believe some of the things I saw and heard. One guy was running a strobe light during a slow dance song. Yeah, like that's really good for setting a romantic mood. At another club the D.J. was using a lap top computer to D.J. with and home stereo speakers. I guess he was to cheap to even buy the professional programs for using a computer for D.J.'n purposes since he was using the standard wave player. This guy would cut each and every song off seconds before it was over then there'd be a few seconds of dead air while the next song would start. No blending of one song into another, no matching the tempo, NOTHING! You can't do that to a dancing crowd. The problem is that with the advent of the internet and "Stealing" music, everyone now thinks they can D.J. and do it cheap with a computer and their stolen library of songs and some home stereo equipment. I started D.J.'n years before I even had a computer and I spend over $1,000 a year to keep my music library current. So be careful in your choice of D.J.'s!
I currently do over 100 shows a year in clubs on top of doing weddings so I have to have the music that gets the crowd up and dancing and I know how to "read" the crowd to keep them on the floor if they want to dance. Being a D.J. for parties is very different from being a radio D.J. As a radio D.J. you never see your listeners so you never learn to "READ THE CROWD", plus most of the music on the radio is "NOT DANCE ORIENTED MUSIC". I'm lucky if 3 songs out of the 40 hit songs I get each month are songs that will get people on the dance floor. At partys I can do group contest favorites such as the hula hoop contests, limbo contests....and have even been known to do musical chairs, fun things that people of all ages can enjoy. After all isn't that the name of the game....keeping your guests of all ages on the dance floor having a great time? I won't embarrass your guests by physically going out into the audience and pulling up unwilling people onto the dance floor. Not everyone's a dancer....I'm not....and I wouldn't appreciate that being done to me. I will not be wearing dorky hats...can't believe someone would think that as being entertaining!!
I have an ex wife whose favorite quote was "VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE". While variety in partners isn't good for a marriage - Variety in music definitely is more likely to please all of your guests. My job is to make those important announcements that need to be made and play a variety of music in different styles for people of all ages to enjoy and doing that brings out the dancers on their own to have a great time at your party!!! It works every time!!

Sadly, is it any wonder why many guests don't stay much past the food serving.
Your guests may not remember the food, flowers, wine and many never see the pictures.
But they will remember the good (or bad) time they had.
The Disc Jockey is the person who can make or break your entire event.
It's safe to say that a D.J. is responsible for 80% of the success rate of your party
with your guests liveliness making up the other 20%.
Take as much time and effort to select your DJ as you did in selecting your spouse!
The DJ will have only one chance to do the show right.
There is no second opportunity to do it over again and that job should not be left up to amateurs.amateurs.
